The International Diabetes Federation

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is a worldwide alliance of over 200 diabetes associations in more than 160 countries, who have come together to enhance the lives of people with diabetes everywhere. For over 50 years, IDF has been at the vanguard of global diabetes advocacy. The Federation is committed to raising global awareness of diabetes, promoting appropriate diabetes care and prevention, and encouraging activities towards finding a cure for the different types of diabetes. It is the mission of IDF to promote diabetes care, prevention and a cure worldwide.

IDF’s working bodies bring together the most important stakeholders from the global diabetes community in a collaborative effort to set common goals and co-ordinate activities towards the attainment of these goals. These stakeholders include: people with diabetes and their families; professionals involved in diabetes healthcare and related fields; diabetes representative organizations, and partners from commercial organizations with concerns which align with our mission. IDF is associated with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations and is in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is the only global advocate for people with diabetes and their healthcare providers. We work together with our member associations to enhance the lives of people with diabetes worldwide. Our mission is to promote diabetes care, prevention and a cure worldwide.

Since we first took up the diabetes cause in 1950, we have evolved into an umbrella organization of over 190 diabetes associations in more than 150 countries.

IDF is a non-governmental organization in official relations with the World Health Organization.

The IDF Regions

The development of the seven Regions of IDF has always been seen as vital to the dynamic growth of the Federation. Their progress can only lead to the strengthening of diabetes associations worldwide.

The regionalization of IDF was approved by the General Council in 1982 and is based on the regional structure of the World Health Organization. IDF has seven Regions:

  • Africa (AFR)
  • Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME)
  • Europe (EUR)
  • South and Central America (SACA)
  • South-East Asia (SEA)
  • Western Pacific (WP)

The regionalization of IDF is based on the Regional Development Plan (RDP), a long-term plan for the development of the seven IDF Regions.  The RDP aims to help the regions acquire all the resources they need to help our member associations, and it is a means to assist the regions in developing a strong regional structure, based on collaboration with the member associations.
